This offering has been a special collaboration that has taken literally years to arrive at this creation.
Redbeard Brewing Company of Staunton, VA, obtained a Heaven Hill rye whiskey barrel for the aging of their 2017-18 Moriarty Imperial Stout. The Moriarty is an exceptional Imperial Stout at 10% ABV crafted in small batches by Jonathan Wright and then aged for one year in select premium whiskey barrels. The beer is extremely heavy and syrupy with incredible chocolate and caramel notes throughout.
Upon completion of the 2018 batch of Moriarty, we obtained the newly drained whiskey (beer) barrel and began aging our Sumatra Mandheling Grade 1 in the barrel. The coffee contents have been regularly rolled around the roasting facility tumbling the beans inside to ensure maximum flavor absorption from the barrel. The results have been Incredible after the coffee’s two months of aging!
This normally incredibly robust, full-flavored Sumatra has transformed magnificently into a coffee that now possesses the heavy body of the Moriarty Stout and illustrates predominate notes of vanilla and rich caramel in a syrupy heavy body influenced by the beer and whiskey at a medium roast. This barrel-aged creation will change drastically with brewing types, and we highly recommend such styles as Aeropress, V60 Pourover and Vacuum Pot to bring out the very most in this incredibly complex coffee.
